My WorksA Simpler Origin for Life
Scientific American, June 2007, cover and pages 24-31 The sudden appearance of a large self-copying article such as RNA was exceedingly improbable. Energy-driven networks of small molecules afford better odds as initiators of life. A new rationale for returning to the Moon? Protecting civilization with a sanctuary
As published in Space Policy (2009) 25, 1-5. doi:10.1016/j.spacepol.2008.12.002 A process is well underway in which the scientific, technical and cultural information vital to our society is stored in digital form within a limited number of computer facilities. This practice will render our civilization vulnerable to a variety of catastrophes which would destroy our knowledge base in addition to the losses they caused to population and structures. The Alliance to Rescue Civilization (ARC) proposes that a staffed data backup facility be constructed in a secure location, with the Moon as the site of choice. If Earth’s population were destroyed entirely, the lunar sanctuary could serve to repopulate the planet. Origins, a Skeptic’s Guide to the Creation of Life on Earth
“Shapiro describes alternative theories for the origin of life through the eyes of an enthusiastic explorer with a friendly skeptic as a companion. It is so well done that one feels like a priviledged visitor watching experiments in progress on the laboratory bench.” -James Lovelock, Nature Planetary Dreams ”If you are interested in the search for extraterrestrial life...., then PLANETARY DREAMS is a must read. …The book is delightfully written with lots of stories interwoven throughout a complete treatment of the many scientific subjects inherent in the questions of life. “ -Louis D. Friedman, Executive Director, The Planetary Society An Alliance to Rescue Civilization
with William E. Burrows; Ad Astra 11, September/October 1999 A staffed lunar sanctuary would store our cultural and technological achievements, and biological specimens. In the event of a global catastrophe (for example asteroid impact, nuclear war, or plague) leading to the collapse of civilization, the base would be used to re-boot civilization or, in the worst case, repopulate the planet. |
